Nottingham Forest have emerged as serious contenders in the race to sign Manchester City midfielder James McAtee, though they face stiff competition from Bundesliga powerhouses Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old playmaker, fresh off starring in England U21s’ European Championship triumph, appears set to leave the Etihad in search of regular first-team football.
Premier League Experience Meets Potential
McAtee brings a compelling blend of top-flight pedigree and untapped potential, having made 48 Premier League appearances (including six in the Champions League) while showing his quality during two productive loan spells at Sheffield United. His seven-goal return for City last season, coupled with his influential performances for England’s U21s (1 goal, 2 assists in the Euros), has only heightened interest across Europe.

Transfer Market Standoff
While suitors believe a £25 million fee could secure the technically-gifted midfielder, Manchester City reportedly value their academy product more highly. With just one year remaining on his contract, the coming weeks could prove decisive as clubs look to test City’s resolve. Serie A sides Fiorentina, Roma and Atalanta have also registered interest, but Forest’s sustained pursuit alongside the German clubs suggests this may become a three-horse race.
Forest’s Ambitious Play
Steve Cooper’s side are making a bold statement by competing with established European outfits for McAtee’s signature. His versatility – capable of operating as an advanced playmaker or deeper-lying midfielder – would address several needs for Forest as they look to build on last season’s survival. However, the lure of Champions League football from Dortmund or Frankfurt presents a significant hurdle in negotiations.
