‘To be clear’ – BBC hit back at Anthony Elanga fake news after Newcastle United £55m bid

Anthony Elanga is expected to finalise his transfer from Nottingham Forest to Newcastle United.

Last week, Newcastle United made a proposal of £55 million for the 23-year-old winger, which Forest accepted.

Last month, Nottingham Forest turned down Newcastle’s £45 million offer for Elanga. Although they haven’t made a

senior acquisition this summer, the Magpies are certain that Elanga will be the first.

The winger is understood to be very keen on joining Newcastle and the prospect of playing Champions League

football after helping Forest qualify for the Conference League with six goals and 11 Premier League assists last

season.

Nottingham Forest ‘fake news’ shut down by BBC

However, as Newcastle closes in on a deal, he might not return for preseason training at Forest.

One post from a Nottingham Forest fan news account garnered considerable attention on social media amid the

rumours and transfer rumours. Elanga is totally dedicated to Forest and is negotiating a new deal, according to the

post, which denied any connections to Newcastle and cited BBC Radio Nottingham Sport as its source.

The BBC felt compelled to step in after the “fake news” item received such a negative response.

“To be clear – we haven’t done an interview with Anthony Elanga since the end of the season,” said BBC Nottingham

Sport’s official X account in response to the claim.

Elanga’s future at the City Ground was not discussed in the interview at the end of the previous season; instead, it

was centred on his stellar second season at Forest. However, he did, in a sense, look ahead to the 2025–2026

campaign.

“Whenever somebody asks me ‘is this my best season?’ I always say it is going to be the next one,” he told BBC

Nottingham Sport.

The next goal, assist, or game is always the best one. You can constantly get better and better. I’ve been working

incredibly hard this season to improve on everything. You can get better in many aspects of football, including

decision-making, finishing, passing, positioning, and overall game knowledge.

“If you are willing to put that extra yard in, that extra work in on and off the pitch, you are more than capable of

reaching heights you wouldn’t think are possible to reach.”

Anthony Elanga addresses Newcastle United transfer links

Elanga has also addressed the links to Newcastle when speaking to the Swedish media.

He said to Fotboll Skanalen last season: “The atmosphere in Nottingham is nice. Newcastle’s interest is evident, and

when a major club expresses interest, it indicates that I am playing good football.

Even though they won two Champions Leagues before I was born, Nottingham is a significant club as well. However,

I have a contract in Nottingham and am content there.

He is now expected to sign a new, long-term contract with Newcastle.
