Off-duty PC praised for confronting armed robbers
A deputy chief constable has hailed an off-duty police officer as a hero for confronting two men during a knifepoint
robbery.
On November 2, Hannan and Humar Mahmood, who were 18 and 20 years old, stole an e-bike and then used a
machete to attack the Met Police PC when he stepped in.
Outside the Luton Point shopping complex, the officer and his wife attempted to stop the brothers from fleeing by
erecting plastic barriers.
The Mahmoods of Belmont Road in the town were found and arrested, and they confessed to robbery, reckless
driving, purposeful injury, and possession of offensive weapons.
Dan Vajzovic, the deputy chief constable for Bedfordshire Police, stated that the force owed the officer “a debt of
gratitude”.
“Without his heroic and selfless intervention, other innocent people may have come to serious harm and the
dangerous Mahmood brothers may have been able to continue their criminal spree,” he stated.

Despite suffering injuries to his arms and chest, he recovered and resumed his duties.
Detectives traced down and detained Hannan and Humar after conducting a thorough investigation.
At Luton Crown Court on Monday, they acknowledged the dangerous driving crimes and grievous bodily harm.
According to Det Insp Caeva Taylor, a major crime unit officer, the accused “were willing to risk killing” the PC in
order to escape.
On a busy Saturday afternoon, the Mahmood brothers robbed an innocent victim, brandished a lethal weapon, and
drove an electric bike crazily in a pedestrian area, demonstrating complete contempt for the safety of people around
them.
“The brazen violence they showed has no place on the streets of Bedfordshire.”
On June 23, Hannan and Humar will be sentenced.
