Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves One Officer Dead, Suspect in Custody in Tamworth

A police officer has been killed and a suspect taken into custody following a tragic officer-involved shooting in Tamworth late Monday evening. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with authorities pledging a full investigation into the deadly encounter.

According to West Midlands Police, officers were responding to reports of a disturbance on Lichfield Street at approximately 8:15 p.m. when the situation escalated into violence. As officers approached the scene, they encountered a man believed to be armed. A confrontation quickly followed, resulting in gunfire.

One officer, identified as a male in his 30s, was shot during the exchange. Despite the efforts of emergency responders and medical staff at Queen’s Hospital Burton, he was pronounced dead a short time later. His identity is being withheld pending formal family notification.

A second officer at the scene managed to subdue the suspect with assistance from arriving backup units. The suspect, a 29-year-old local man, was taken into custody without further injury. He remains in police custody and is expected to face charges including the murder of a police officer.

In a statement issued late Monday night, Chief Superintendent Claire Bell described the event as a “dark day” for the Tamworth policing community.

“Our hearts are broken. One of our officers has tragically lost his life in the line of duty while doing what he swore to do—protecting the public. We are devastated, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who served alongside him,” she said.

The area around the crime scene was cordoned off overnight as forensic teams combed for evidence. Police have confirmed that body-worn camera footage is being reviewed and witness statements are being collected to establish a clear picture of the events leading up to the shooting.

Residents in the area described the scene as chaotic. “We heard shouting and then a few loud bangs,” said a neighbour who asked not to be named. “Then we saw flashing lights everywhere. I just can’t believe something like this happened right on our doorstep.”

Tamworth MP Christopher Pincher released a statement Tuesday morning offering condolences and calling for unity: “I am deeply saddened by this senseless loss. Our police officers put their lives on the line every day, and this tragic incident reminds us of the risks they face. The community stands with West Midlands Police in this time of grief.”

Flags at local government buildings and police stations across Staffordshire have been lowered to half-mast in honour of the fallen officer. A candlelight vigil is being planned in the Tamworth town centre later this week.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been notified and is monitoring the investigation, as is protocol in any fatal officer-involved incident.

The suspect is expected to be formally charged within the next 24 hours.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
