Official: Coventry City ‘agrees terms’ to sign 26-year old Danish striker with promotion ambitions

Emil Riis, a Danish striker who has been a thorn in the Sky Blues’ side for the past four seasons, is reportedly being pursued by Coventry City and Sheffield United, Championship promotion rivals. When his Preston North End contract expires this summer, the 26-year-old will be free to sign with any team, and according to Sky Sports, the Sky Blues are interested in the center-forward.

In each of the previous four Championship campaigns, Riis, a mobile number nine with a strong shot, has scored against Coventry.

He has also scored the game-winning goal three times (once at the CBS and twice at Deepdale) and scored in the opening minute of North End’s 3-0 victory in the West Midlands in February 2024.

On the social media site X, where he has around 47,000 followers, Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph wrote: “A number of Championship clubs are interested in Preston North End striker Emil Riis Jakobsen, including Sheffield United and Coventry City.
“The 26-year-old’s contract is about to expire, and it’s known that he would prefer to join a team that hopes to advance to the Premier League.” While the Blades fell to Sunderland in last month’s Championship play-off final, City has made it clear that they want to move up to the top tier and have been very near twice in the last three years with play-off campaigns.

After joining from Randers FC for an estimated £1.2 million, Riis stayed at Deepdale for four and a half years. Despite missing nearly a year of sport due to a major knee injury sustained in January 2023, he left the Lilywhites with an outstanding record of 58 goal contributions in 186 games.

Riis has previously been linked to Sheffield United, and during his time at Middlesbrough, Blades manager Chris Wilder made a bid for him. In the summer of 2022, Boro reportedly offered £7.5 million for the striker. Riis has also reportedly attracted the attention of Sunderland in the past.
