Oldham Athletic boss Mellon delighted with play-off progress.
Micky Mellon praised an “unbelievable unity” – from the sold-out home stands to the players, owners and staff – as Oldham Athletic booked their place in the National League play-off semi-finals.
A trip to York City awaits Latics next Tuesday after they dismantled Halifax Town 4-0 at Boundary Park.
Three of the goals came in the first half – all headers for Joe Garner, Mark Kitching and top scorer Mike Fondop, who took his tally for the season to 20.
Joe Pritchard wrapped up the win with a superb finish nine minutes into the second half, with Latics backed by 9,250 buoyant fans in a crowd of 10,865.

“When you get into those kind of situations you just don’t want to let people down, you see the ground all full and you go ‘come on boys, let’s deliver’ and deliver they did. They were terrific, showed a lot of composure in what was a terrific atmosphere and executed all the things that we work on all the time and we’re really, really pleased to get to the next stage,” said Mellon.
“We just seemed to get things right. I say all the time the players have to go out and play well and they did, and they showed the qualities needed to score those types of goals, from the decision making about when to do it and to knock it into those areas and go and attack it.
“I thought we looked full of energy, we looked full of desire and we played very well and deserved a really important result.
“I was really pleased with the way we came out of the traps and an unbelievable atmosphere created by our fantastic support.
“The whole squad, players that didn’t play, there was just an unbelievable unity, and that kind of connection with the supporters and the Rothwell family and Darren (Royle) was just brilliant to be a part of that. I loved it and that’s what we all crave.”
