Omer Riza sacked and Aaron Ramsey named interim head coach as Bluebirds battle against Championship relegation

Wales great Ramsey has been granted control of Cardiff City till the end of the season after Omer Riza was appointed

in December following an outstanding interim stint in charge, but the team is currently in second place in the

Championship and one point from safety with three games remaining.

Cardiff City have sacked Omer Riza and installed Aaron Ramsey as interim head coach until the end of the season.

Cardiff are second-bottom in the Championship, a point from safety after losing 2-0 at Sheffield United on Friday.

After an outstanding tenure as interim manager following Erol Bulut’s dismissal in September, Riza was given the

position in early December.

But after just one victory in the previous nine Championship games, he was fired himself.

“We’d like to thank Omer for his passion and effort during his time as Cardiff City manager and wish him the very

best for his next steps in the game,” the club said in a statement.

After only making eight Championship appearances this season owing to injury, the 34-year-old Wales veteran

Ramsey will now attempt to guide his boyhood team to survival in their final three games.

After Cardiff had one point from six games, their worst start to a season in 94 years, Riza replaced the fired Bulut.

Riza’s temporary appointment was extended till the conclusion of the season due to a positive start and improved

performance.

But Cardiff have nose-dived since the start of February, winning only twice in that time and are currently bottom of

the Championship form table.

When Riza accused “a lot of them” of being “clueless” in their criticism of him and the club earlier this week, he

infuriated Cardiff supporters.

After a stellar career at Arsenal and Juventus, Wales captain Ramsey returned to his home club, Cardiff, in the

summer of 2023.

After undergoing surgery last month to repair a torn hamstring, Ramsey is currently out due to injury.

Against Oxford and West Brom at home and Norwich away on the last day of the season on May 3, Cardiff wraps off

their campaign.
