Luton Town were never in a big position to spend under Rob Edwards but the boss must show he knows how to spend – and build a team – at Middlesbrough.
Rob Edwards has a fantastic opportunity to advance in his managerial career while also restoring Middlesbrough’s fortunes.
It’s entirely up to him. He needs to demonstrate that the ups and downs at Luton Town were a learning lesson that he can apply in the future. This is Rob’s opportunity to demonstrate his ability to make a significant effect in what is possibly his most important job to yet.
One thing he must demonstrate is his ability to spend money sensibly while putting together a new-look side. In the past, Edwards has frequently had to work with what he had. At the same time, he has done an admirable job of extracting the most from a collection of otherwise mediocre players.
That’s excellent quality. There are a few players at the Boro who are capable of delivering significantly more than they did last season. This is an excellent opportunity for Morgan Whittaker, Daniel Burgzorg, Marcus Forss, Riley McGree, and other players to return to their desired level. That is, if they are all still here by August.
Edwards needs to improve in almost every area, and Boro, while far from competing with the top teams financially, will be able to provide some assistance. It’s excellent that Edwards appears to have settled in. The general assessment of the current team will be well underway.
It’s also interesting that Edwards isn’t offering a promotion. After all, that is the word everyone wants to hear. Instead, he believes there will be progress this season. However, for most supporters, development entails being in the top six or higher.
On the other hand, Edwards is sensible in not promising something that may not be fulfilled. But, if he matches the desires that blaze in the stands, he will want to see Boro return to the top flight as soon as possible.
As always, there will be no shortage of backing from above. Steve Gibson will do his best to offer whatever he desires, within reason. Edwards’ early success at his prior clubs suggests that he will have an instant impact. The incoming head coach will have to focus on keeping it going in the long run.
Boro’s 5-1 victory over Luton at the Riverside was their easiest home win of the season. The Hatters offered no resistance. Two years previously, the game was much closer. Boro triumphed 2-1, despite the fact that the Hatters were down to ten men well before Matt Crooks’ injury-time goal.
To be fair to Edwards, his Luton team was very different from the one that suffered a 5-1 defeat. In fact, just two Luton players started both games. Edwards appears to insist on accepting blame after his teams lose.
It’s one way of relieving pressure on the players and attempting to maintain unity in the locker room. Something is undeniably true. He’s a very pleasant guy who the players will warm to right away. So, in addition to successfully signing and selling this summer, Edwards must focus on making an immediate impression on the squad in order to build a winning team.
And if the going becomes difficult at any point, Edwards will have to show that he, too, is tough. Since Aitor Karanka’s tenure, no Boro manager has lasted more than three years. It would be fantastic to see Edwards break the mould. Good luck, Rob.
