Sheffield Wednesday must take valuable lesson from Plymouth Argyle amid Danny Rohl uncertainty.

It’s been a difficult week for Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle fans, but one team has efficiently resolved a terrible situation, and the other is allowing it to persist.

After being relegated from the Championship, Plymouth Argyle was bound to have a rough summer. The South Coast club is anticipated to lose key players such as Ryan Hardie and Maksym Talovierov, while Miron Muslic quickly improved his reputation in the second part of the season. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are in financial problems again, with Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay his players and staff in May. This adds to growing concerns over Danny Rohl’s future, as he appears intent to arrange a move away from Hillsborough this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday refuse to budge on Danny Rohl

While Rohl has been connected with Leicester City and Southampton for some time, it is believed he would like to return home to Germany this summer. Just a few days ago, it was claimed that Werder Bremen was willing to pay Rohl’s release clause in order to re-sign him. However, that fell through when the release clause became costly once more, leaving Rohl with a difficult dilemma. Does the youthful coach leave Sheffield Wednesday and become a free agent? One thing is certain: the club is not about to sack him to make things easy. In any case, Rohl created a’messy’ situation on Wednesday, which the fans are not pleased with.

There is something that can be done to make all this smoother, though. The only problem is, it will require Chansiri to do something he has never done before: Make a compromise.

Plymouth Argyle handled Miron Muslic issue swiftly

Chansiri only needs to look to Plymouth for an example of how a very frustrating and negative situation can be dealt with quickly to reduce the impact on the team. Muslic revealed his move to Germany this weekend, angering fans with his evident willingness to leave the relegated team. Plymouth’s chairman, Simon Hallett, has lambasted Muslic for the way he orchestrated the exit. The former Argyle manager had previously stated to the club’s administration that he was devoted to the cause, only to change his mind shortly thereafter without notice. It’s not an ideal situation for Plymouth, who are expected to earn promotion from League One next season regardless. The club handled the situation with pragmatism and efficiency, though — something the Owls must take note of.

Instead of forcing a wantaway manager to stay put and refusing to discuss a compensation price, Hallett and co. devised an agreement that would terminate the crisis quickly while still providing them with a sufficient financial settlement.

Given Sheffield Wednesday’s obvious financial troubles, Chansiri should seek a similar solution to Rohl’s situation. He may not receive the whole £5 million release price outlined in Rohl’s contract, but at this stage, any fee may be preferable to having a miserable manager or one who abandons the club completely.
