Over 40 uninsured vehicles taken off Luton streets in just 8 hours.
Police confiscated over 40 cars in Luton as part of an operation to crack down on uninsured drivers. On Tuesday, March 11, the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit (BCH RPU) collaborated with the Motor no Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) to detect persons driving without insurance and removed 43 vehicles from the road due to a lack of or inadequate insurance. Another eight were arrested for not paying taxes, driving without a licence or driving alone while on a provisional licence.
During the sting, three vehicles were taken at different times, but they were all tied to the same person. The man’s automobile was removed when he claimed to be using a trade policy, but the insurer found no record of the vehicle on the appropriate policy. A few minutes later, his wife’s vehicle was impounded for the identical infraction. As the individual returned with a buddy to speak with police, his friend’s vehicle was discovered to be inadequately insured and was seized by police.

MIB data released in November 2024 shows that the LU1 to LU4 postcodes account for four of Bedfordshire’s top five hotspots. This suggests that the places are potentially high-risk, with an ongoing problem of uninsured drivers. Chief Inspector Stephen O’Keeffe, Head of the BCH RPU, stated: “This targeted operation, in collaboration with the MIB, concentrated our collaborative efforts on areas notorious for high rates of uninsured driving. By identifying these sites and collaborating, we have proactively caught these drivers, indicating that if you drive without insurance, we can and will catch you.”
