Paterson admits pressure was on Notts to deliver

Notts County boss Martin Paterson admitted his side were under pressure to perform before recording their first win of the season in Wednesday’s 4-1 victory against Shrewsbury Town.

The Magpies had only one point from a possible nine in League Two before the match, but they were easily the better team at Meadow Lane, playing confident, one-touch game.

“[I’m] happy because, to be honest with you, there was pressure going into that game, and rightfully so, because of what had happened in the first three games,” Paterson, who took over for the ousted Stuart Maynard in June, told BBC Radio Nottingham.

“It’s not all been dour but certainly we needed to put a full 90-minute performance together and I thought we did that.”

Matthew Dennis, Sonny Aljofree, Nick Tsaroulla, and Conor Grant scored as County cruised to win over an out-of-form Shrewsbury side that has now lost every game since their season-opening draw against Bromley.

“There’s still a few things inside it that we can’t get carried away with – we’ve had people do that against us and I don’t agree with it – the important thing is we pay respect to the opponents,” Paterson went on.

“Tonight was the first performance that resembled Notts County.”

“With that, there were moments in the second half when I thought the lads were trying to wound me up with some of their decisions, but that’s part of the learning process.

“So, positive night with four good goals, but I still want a clean sheet. That is extremely crucial; it should not be ignored, and it will not be with the back unit.

County resume their League Two season with a home game against Bromley on Saturday [15:00 BST].
