Police in Sheffield were negotiating with a ‘dangerous man’ on a balcony, as seen in dramatic pictures posted online.
South Yorkshire Police were alerted to a man who was ‘at risk to himself with weapons’ around 7pm last night. This resulted in a mass eviction of the block and orders for residents in neighbouring towers to stay indoors. New images show police negotiators on a balcony with the suspect.
Sheffield’s city centre has been at a standstill since last night, with emergency services closing roads and roundabouts around a block of flats near Sheffield Parkway. All emergency services are still responding to the situation.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said, “We, along with other emergency services, are still on the scene at Broad Street in Sheffield.” We responded shortly after 7 p.m. last night (Monday, February 10), to concerns about a man inside a property who was alleged to have weapons and pose a risk to himself.
“Those inside the building where the property is located have been evacuated, and those in neighbouring buildings have been asked to remain indoors while officers conduct their investigation.
“The Sheffield Parkway between the Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way will be closed this morning; please plan accordingly and find an alternate route. Trams are also affected in the area, so travellers should check Travel South Yorkshire at https://orlo.uk/12YTE. ”
It reads: “A61 Sheffield Parkway in both directions closed, long delays due to police incident from B6070 Duke Street (Park Square roundabout) to Derek Dooley Way.” Congestion on most routes into the city centre.
“Park Square Roundabout, A61 Sheaf Street, Broad Street, and part of Duke Street are all closed. Ongoing since Monday evening.
