As Plymouth Argyle continues to look for a replacement for Miron Muslic, a fresh name is rising to the top of the list of possible candidates.
Since Muslic left the team for the German team Schalke at the end of May, the Pilgrims have been strongly linked to players like Ian Evatt and Jack Wilshere.
However, if the odds given by the bookmakers are to be believed, it appears that Tom Cleverley’s chances of getting the managerial position at Home Park are improving. After leading the Hornets to a 14th-place finish in his first full season as manager, the former Watford manager was fired at the start of May.
Luke Hodge, a Plymouth Argyle supporter on FLW, believes that if the Home Park executives can close the transaction, this will be a far more popular option.
Tom Cleverley is a standout in the “underwhelming” manager shortlist

Hodge believes Cleverley is the best candidate to take over Plymouth after observing the supporters’ social media responses.
Cleverley’s name generated excitement that the other current group of potential managers did not. “Going off of Argyle’s socials, he would be a very popular appointment with the majority of the fans,” he stated.
“He’s another young and possibly potential risk-taking appointment, but he’s managed 60-odd games at Watford, which gives us a bit more comfort compared to someone like Jack Wilshere – although he’s still someone I’d be happy with.”
After leaving Norwich City to pursue chances abroad, Wilshere is currently searching for his first permanent managerial position.
The Canaries‘ final two games of the 2024–25 season were temporary managed by the former Arsenal midfielder.
“The feedback seems to be a little underwhelming from the three managers currently in our shortlist [Evatt, Wilshere, and Des Buckingham,
” Hodge added. “But when the Cleverley news broke, the mood definitely changed and there was far more positivity in the fanbase, so overall he seems like a very popular choice to take over the reins.”
Given that Tom Cleverley’s style is compared to Miron Music, Plymouth Argyle can only benefit.

Hodge contrasted Tom Cleverley’s style of play to that of former manager Miron Muslic, who since taking over from Wayne Rooney in January had Argyle playing at the level of a mid-table Championship team.
“[His style is] adaptable, focusing on efficiency and a more attacking approach over time, which is something we tried under Muslic last season,
” he said. “While we were still relegated, performances were improving under him, so keeping with that same philosophy may well be the way Argyle want to go, and the four new signings seem to have signed with that in mind.
” This summer, the Pilgrims have already signed Bradley Ibrahim, Caleb Watts, Jamie Patterson, and Jack McKenzie. Watts and Patterson reached agreements when Muslic was still in charge.
Hodge believes that Cleverley’s appointment will offer Plymouth a strong chance of returning to the Championship right away.
“He likes high energy, playing for the badge, and he can adapt his style of play, as seen in the Championship, which we are aiming to get back to.”
