Plymouth Argyle make £1.2m move for League One striker

Plymouth Argyle have triggered the £1.2m release clause of Port Vale striker Lorent Tolaj, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.

Plymouth Argyle have had a dreadful start to the new League One season, sitting 23rd after losing all four league games, with only Peterborough United keeping them from the bottom of the table.
After taking over for Miron Muslic, who departed to join FC Schalke in May, new manager Tom Cleverley has had a rough start.
Despite making multiple acquisitions this summer, the Devonshire club has had a tough summer.

However, the additions have been low-budget, with several coming on free transfers, raising suspicions among fans about the club’s ownership. There is still an obvious vacuum at striker, with Plymouth Argyle yet to replace Ryan Hardie with a new talisman.

However, after triggering the £1.2 million release clause for Port Vale’s Lorent Tolaj, it appears that PAFC is now on the verge of acquiring its much-needed striker.

Plymouth Argyle finally addressing striker issue

A striker has been at the top of the list at Home Park for some time, and Tolaj’s acquisition may finally fill that void.

Owen Oseni started the season brightly, scoring three goals in four games for the club, but it appears that he will not be the key man leading the line this season. Aribim Pepple, who joined from Luton Town, is another player who may not be ready for the next level, with both considered as better developing alternatives for depth and competition.

Since Hardie’s departure, PAFC has struggled to find goals, scoring only three this season.

A deal for Tolaj would significantly increase Tom Cleverley’s attacking options as the club looks to turn their disappointing start to the season into a promotion battle.

What can Plymouth Argyle fans expect from Lorent Tolaj?

Tolaj, 23, has played football in England for Cambridge United, Salford City, and Aldershot Town in the National League.

Despite this, he has minimal League One experience, having played four games for Cambridge in 2022 and starting all four games for Port Vale this season, scoring in Tuesday night’s defeat to Stevenage.

Tolaj, on the other hand, performed admirably last season, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists to help Vale gain promotion to League One.

He began his career in his native Switzerland, where he played for FC Sion, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018 and joining their academy.

He never made a first-team appearance for the Seagulls and departed on a free transfer to Aldershot Town, before joining Port Vale last season.
