Police Called In After House Erupts in Flames – Latest Suspicious Blaze in West Tamworth

Authorities are investigating yet another suspicious fire in West Tamworth after a house was engulfed in flames on Thursday afternoon, marking the latest in a string of concerning incidents in the area.

 

Emergency services were called to the property on Goonoo Goonoo Road around 2:15 pm, where they arrived to find thick smoke billowing from the residence. Fire crews from Tamworth and surrounding stations worked rapidly to contain the blaze, which had already taken hold of the structure by the time they arrived. No one was reported to be inside the home at the time, and no injuries have been confirmed.

 

New South Wales Police have since declared the fire suspicious and launched a full investigation. Forensic teams were on site later that evening to examine the scene, while officers conducted door-to-door inquiries to gather information from local residents.

 

Detective Inspector Ian Lister from Oxley Police District confirmed the investigation is being treated as a high priority. “At this stage, we are not ruling anything out,” he said. “Given the circumstances surrounding this fire, and its proximity in time and location to other recent blazes, we are looking at potential links.”

 

This latest fire follows several similar incidents in the West Tamworth area over the past two months. A series of small grass and bin fires had already sparked concern among residents, with police previously appealing for information and stepping up patrols in response to community anxiety.

 

Locals say the frequency of these fires has created a growing sense of unease. “It’s getting really worrying,” said one neighbour, who asked not to be named. “First it was rubbish bins, then sheds, and now a whole house? It’s like someone’s trying to push things further each time.”

 

Residents have also reported suspicious activity in the area, including individuals seen loitering near vacant properties and alleyways during late-night hours. Police are urging anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from nearby streets around the time of Thursday’s fire to come forward.

 

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Scott Dodson praised the swift action of firefighters, saying it prevented further damage to neighbouring homes. “Our crews did an exceptional job in containing the fire under challenging conditions,” he said. “But the risk to lives and property cannot be understated. These fires are serious and dangerous.”

 

Investigators are now examining whether the house was deliberately targeted. It is believed the property was vacant at the time, which may have made it more vulnerable to arson.

 

In response to the escalating incidents, community leaders have called for increased lighting, security cameras, and neighbourhood watch efforts. “We need to work together as a community to stay alert and help police track down whoever is responsible,” said local councillor Jane Roberts.
