
Police have arrested a man at Newcastle Central Station following reports of child safety concerns.
The incident occurred in the area surrounding Central Station in Newcastle City Centre.
British Transport Police have issued a statement following today’s incident in Newcastle’s city centre. This afternoon, police were called to an area outside Newcastle Central Station after reports that a man ‘was behaving erratically towards two children’.
Officers from Northumbria Police and the British Transport Police (BTP) were dispatched to the scene at around 2.30pm. BTP reports that one man has been arrested.
Police have also stated that they are aware of social media speculation claiming the children were assaulted, but that the children involved were unharmed. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway.
British Transport Police have now issued the following statement: “Officers were called to the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle around 2.30pm today (1 May) following a report that a man was behaving erratically towards two children.
“We are aware of speculation on social media that the children were assaulted, but they were unharmed.
“The man was arrested by colleagues from Northumbria Police, and investigations are now underway to determine the full circumstances of what occurred.
“Any witnesses who haven’t already spoken to the police are asked to text 61016 quoting reference 358 of 01/05/25.”
A Northumbria Police spokesperson stated, “We are aware of a report of a man behaving erratically towards two children outside of Central Station in Newcastle today at around 2:30pm.
The circumstances surrounding the report are currently being investigated by the British Transport Police. We would ask the public not to speculate online.”
Online speculation about the incident has been widespread, with many concerned bystanders sharing images and videos on social media.
