Police Issue Update After Armed Officers Swoop on Blackburn Street Following Double Stabbing
Police have issued an update following a dramatic armed response in Blackburn after two people were stabbed on a residential street. The incident, which prompted a large-scale emergency response including armed officers, took place on Sunday evening, causing widespread concern among local residents.
Lancashire Constabulary confirmed that the incident occurred shortly after 6:00 PM on a street in the Bastwell area of Blackburn. Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a violent altercation. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men suffering from stab wounds.
Paramedics from North West Ambulance Service provided immediate medical attention at the scene before both victims were taken to hospital. As of Monday morning, police said one of the victims remains in a serious but stable condition, while the other is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said:
“We were called to reports of a stabbing on Sunday evening. Armed officers were deployed as a precaution due to the nature of the incident and to ensure the safety of the public and emergency personnel. Two men were located with stab wounds and have been taken to hospital. Their families have been informed.”
Following the attack, officers swiftly launched an investigation and a significant police presence was maintained in the area overnight. A cordon was set up on the affected street to allow forensic teams to carry out a thorough examination of the scene.
Police have since confirmed that one individual has been arrested in connection with the stabbings. The suspect, a 27-year-old man from Blackburn, was detained at a nearby property without further incident. He remains in police custody for questioning.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Winstanley, who is leading the investigation, said:
“This was a shocking incident that has left two men in hospital. We understand the concern this will cause in the community, and we want to reassure residents that we have a dedicated team of officers working to establish exactly what happened and why. One man has been arrested and our enquiries are ongoing.”
He added that while a motive is yet to be established, police are not treating the attack as a random incident, and there is no wider threat to the public.
Residents in the area reported hearing shouting before the arrival of emergency services, with one witness describing the scene as “chaotic” as multiple police vehicles, ambulances, and armed officers converged on the street.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said the local resident, who did not wish to be named. “There were armed police with guns shouting commands. It was scary, especially with kids around.”
Lancashire Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the attack, to come forward. They have set up a dedicated contact line for witnesses and are encouraging the public to assist in the investigation.
In the meantime, officers will continue to carry out high-visibility patrols in the area to reassure the community and answer any questions from concerned residents.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 1127 of May 4, or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
