Police Launch Appeal After Blackburn Factory Fire That Was ‘Started Deliberately’

Police have launched an urgent appeal for information following a large fire at a factory in Blackburn, which they believe was started deliberately.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11:30 PM on Friday night, after reports of a major blaze at an industrial unit on Haslingden Road. Fire crews from several stations raced to tackle the flames, which had already engulfed a significant portion of the building by the time they arrived.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it took several hours to bring the fire under control, with firefighters remaining at the scene well into Saturday morning to ensure the area was made safe. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the factory has suffered extensive damage, and nearby businesses were also affected by smoke and water.

After an initial investigation, Lancashire Police have now confirmed that they are treating the fire as suspicious. Early findings suggest the blaze was started deliberately, prompting officers to launch a formal investigation into the circumstances.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said:

*”This was a major fire that caused significant damage and could have had serious consequences. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the impact on local businesses and the wider community is considerable. We are treating this incident as arson and are now appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area on Friday night to come forward.”*

Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been driving in the area around the time of the fire and who may have dashcam footage. CCTV from nearby properties is also being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Detective Inspector Mark Gill added:

*”Fires like this are incredibly dangerous and put lives at risk, not only of those who work at the premises but also of emergency service personnel and members of the public. We are determined to find those responsible and bring them to justice. If you have any information, no matter how small, we urge you to contact us immediately.”*

Local residents reported hearing loud bangs coming from the factory site late on Friday night, with some describing the scene as “terrifying” as flames lit up the sky. Roads in the area were closed for several hours as crews battled the fire and ensured the scene was secure.

The fire has caused significant disruption to surrounding businesses, many of which had to close temporarily on Saturday due to smoke damage and access restrictions. The council has pledged to support affected companies as the recovery effort continues.

Lancashire Police are asking anyone with information to call 101, quoting log reference 1423 of April 25, 2025. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officers are expected to carry out forensic examinations at the site over the coming days. More updates will be provided as the situation develops.
