Police Searching for Green Ford with Stolen Number Plates After Dangerous Chase
Police are on the hunt for the driver of a green Ford sedan that led officers on a high-speed and dangerous pursuit through Tamworth on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities believe the vehicle was fitted with stolen number plates and are calling on the public to assist with information that may lead to its identification.
The chase began shortly after 3:30pm on Wednesday, when officers from the Oxley Police District attempted to stop the vehicle on Bridge Street following reports of erratic driving. Instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated, initiating a pursuit that would stretch through several busy streets in Tamworth’s city centre and surrounding suburbs.
According to police, the green Ford was seen weaving in and out of traffic, ignoring red lights and reaching dangerously high speeds in residential areas. On multiple occasions, pedestrians and other motorists were forced to take evasive action to avoid being struck.
“Given the circumstances and the significant risk posed to the community, officers made the decision to terminate the pursuit shortly after it began,” an Oxley Police spokesperson said. “Public safety is our highest priority.”
Despite calling off the chase, police continued tracking the vehicle’s movements through CCTV and community reports. It was last seen heading south on Goonoo Goonoo Road before disappearing from sight near the outskirts of Tamworth.
Further investigations have revealed that the number plates attached to the vehicle had been reported stolen from another vehicle earlier in the week. Police believe the green Ford itself may also be stolen, though they are yet to confirm this.
“We are urging anyone who saw a green Ford sedan in Tamworth on Wednesday afternoon, particularly between 3:30pm and 4:00pm, to come forward,” the police spokesperson added. “We’re also asking residents and businesses in the area to check any dashcam or security camera footage they might have.”
Authorities are appealing for information on both the vehicle and the driver, who is described as a male wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident. The green Ford is believed to be an older model, possibly from the early 2000s, and may have sustained damage during the pursuit.
Residents in Tamworth have expressed concern over the incident, with several witnesses describing the vehicle as driving “like a maniac” and “completely out of control.”
“It was terrifying,” said one bystander who was near Bridge Street when the chase began. “He nearly hit a car with kids in the backseat. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the suspect may be linked to other crimes in the region and are working closely with nearby police districts to widen the search.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the online reporting tool at www.crimestoppers.com.au. All reports can be made anonymously.
Investigations are continuing.
