Pope Francis has died on Easter Monday at age of 88

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, at his home in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

At 9:45 a.m., Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced Pope Francis’ death from the Casa Santa Marta, saying:

“With deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis, the Bishop of Rome, at 7:35 this morning. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church, and he taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of

The Pope was hospitalised to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, following a bout of bronchitis that lasted several days.

Pope Francis’ medical condition deteriorated significantly, and his physicians diagnosed bilateral pneumonia on Tuesday, February 18.

Following 38 days in the hospital, the late Pope went to his Vatican apartment, the Casa Santa Marta, to continue his treatment.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, then in his early twenties, had surgery in his native Argentina in 1957 to remove a piece of his lung damaged by a serious respiratory infection.

Pope Francis suffered from respiratory problems on a regular basis as he grew older, postponing a planned travel to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023 owing to influenza and lung inflammation.

In April 2024, the late Pope Francis approved a new copy of the liturgical book for papal burial ceremonies, which will lead the funeral Mass, which has yet to be scheduled.

The second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis has various additional provisions, notably how the Pope’s mortal remains should be handled after death.

The ascertainment of death occurs in the chapel rather than the chamber where he died, and his body is immediately placed inside the coffin.

According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope Francis ordered that the funeral ceremonies be streamlined and centred on conveying the Church’s trust in the Risen Body of Christ.

“The renewed rite,” added Archbishop Ravelli, “seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world.”
