Portsmouth forced to sweat on injury picked up by Fratton favourite Callum Lang during defeat to Norwich City

Callum Lang, a Fratton favourite, sustained an injury during Portsmouth’s loss to Norwich City, forcing them to struggle.

Before conducting a thorough evaluation of the injury that sidelined Callum Lang during the Blues’ Championship loss to Norwich City, Pompey will hold off until Monday. Shortly after grabbing his left hamstring after a challenge near the Norwich penalty area, the forward was taken off the pitch on minute 57. With the Blues behind 2-0 at the moment, Lang tried to continue but gave the bench a signal when he couldn’t.

The well-liked Fratton Park star was forced to miss 10 of Pompey’s final 13 games of the 2024–25 season after suffering a similar injury against Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium previous season. The Blues have revealed that he was substituted out of Saturday’s 2-1 loss against the Canaries due to a hamstring injury. In order to accurately assess the problem’s seriousness, they now intend to wait until after the weekend. Next Saturday, Pompey will visit West Brom, and on August 30, they will host Preston North End at Fratton Park.

Head coach John Mousinho gave an update on Lang’s condition, saying: “We’ll see how that settles down on Monday. He’s felt his hamstring.” Although it’s a huge blow, you witnessed today that injuries play a significant role in the game. It’s an aspect of the game that everyone must deal with; I believe Norwich had three of them, and they substituted them at halftime. “I felt that Lang was outstanding today; he made an impact during the game and won that free kick, but he was unfortunately taken off with an injury.”

After moving from Wigan to Fratton Park in January 2024 for an unknown fee, Lang has become a vital member of the Pompey first team. The 26-year-old helped the Blues win League One with four goals in the second half of that season. Prior to tearing his hamstring during Pompey’s 2-0 victory against the U’s in February, he was the team’s most impressive player in the Championship the previous season. By that point, Lang had scored ten goals, which were crucial to the Blues’ continued Championship position.

In the summer, second-tier rivals Preston North End reportedly made a £2 million bid for the player, who still has one year left on his contract. Pompey, meanwhile, has consistently insisted that the forward is not for sale. Harvey Blair and Marlon Pack, who have not yet appeared for the Blues this season, are now joined on the sidelines by Lang. After missing the season’s first game due to a hamstring injury, Josh Murphy made a comeback to the starting lineup against Norwich.
