
Portsmouth man found guilty of aggravated malicious wounding, other charges after violent domestic incident.
Maurice Ruffin II was found guilty on Tuesday in an April 2022 incident that involved shooting and assaulting his girlfriend following an argument.
Portsmouth, Virginia. A jury found a Portsmouth man guilty of multiple violent charges stemming from an April 2022 incident with his girlfriend.
Maurice Ruffin II was found guilty on the following charges:
- aggravated malicious wounding
- shooting in commission of a felony
- abduction
- use of a firearm in commission of abduction
- use of a firearm in commission of aggravated malicious wounding
- brandishing a firearm
- maliciously discharging a firearm in an occupied building
According to evidence presented at the trial, on April 13, 2022, Ruffin accompanied his girlfriend, the victim, to a vacant flat in Portsmouth’s 1500 block of Leckie Street. The victim was the owner of a cleaning company and was about to prepare the flat for rent.
Before Ruffin and the victim arrived, Ruffin accused the victim of infidelity, resulting in an escalating argument. Once inside the flat, Ruffin became violent, pinning and choking the victim.
He then pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at her, according to documents. The victim managed to break free from Ruffin and tried to flee to the toilet for safety, but Ruffin pursued her and fired a shot.
The victim was struck in the left hand and right side of her head, and the bullet penetrated the apartment wall and entered the bathroom of an adjacent unit.
According to the Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, “the victim survived the attack but sustained significant and long-lasting injuries.”
