Sheffield Wednesday have a lot of ‘potential for growth’ for possible takeover investors, reporter Chris Dunlavy believes.
Sheffield Wednesday are still owned by Dejphon Chansiri. However, he is becoming an increasingly more controversial figure at Hillsbororough among the SWFC fanbase.

Journalist Dunlavy has written in the latest edition of the Football League Paper (20.04.25, page 7): “US investors are desperate to snap up the dwindling number of marketable Football League clubs that don’t already have stateside owners, and Wednesday are undoubtedly one of the biggest around.
“There is a lot wrong with the Championship club – not least a crumbling stadium that is separately owned by Chansiri – but at a reasonable price there’s simply no way a hedge fund or venture capitalist wouldn’t see the potential for growth. The only reasonable conclusion is that they are being deterred – directly or indirectly – by the behaviour of Sheffield Wednesday’s owner.”
Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 2-0 away at Stoke City last time out on Good Friday. They are back in action on Easter Monday against Middlesbrough at home as they look to bounce back.
Sheffield Wednesday takeover latest
It remains to be seen at this stage exactly whether Chansiri wants to sell Sheffield Wednesday. A large section of supporters staged a protest at their last home match against Oxford United where they turned their back.
As Dunlavy alluded to, the Owls do have potential to grow in the future under the right ownership. They have a ready-made giant catchment area.
The club haven’t been in the top flight for 25 years and are crying out for someone to take them back up. They came close in 2016 but were beaten in the play-off final by Hull City.
Sheffield Wednesday were taken over by Chansiri back in 2015. It has since been a turbulent past decade for the South Yorkshire club that has turned more sour over recent times.
What next for Sheffield Wednesday?
Popular head coach Danny Rohl is facing an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday. It is yet to be known whether he will stay at SWFC when this term is over.
The German arrived back in October 2023 as a bit of an unknown quantity. He has worked at Southampton and Bayern Munich in the past.
The Owls were in a relegation battle when he took over from Xisco Munoz. Rohl then managed to keep them up and his team have since challenged higher up the division.
Sheffield Wednesday take on Portsmouth and Watford after their clash against Middlesbrough. They are winless in their last six outings.
