Premier League club Sunderland receives massive support from Mexican fans and this is how they responded.
Far from ignoring the phenomenon, the club decided to embrace it enthusiastically, acknowledging the full support of Mexican fans.

Newly promoted to the Premier League after eight years out of the top flight, they have found a new group of fans… in Mexico.
The Origin of the Trend
On August 16, 2025, user @MakinaAzulMX launched a proposal on the X platform that Mexican fans choose a European club at random to support during the season. The choice fell on Sunderland, a historic English team returning to the Premier League after a long absence.

The idea quickly gained traction and coincided with Sunderland’s dream debut in the 2025-26 season, where they secured a 3-0 victory over West Ham United. That same weekend, thousands of Mexican fans flooded the English club’s official social media accounts to show their support, much to the surprise and intrigue of British supporters about why so many Mexicans identified with their team.
Sunderland’s response
Far from ignoring the phenomenon, the club decided to embrace it enthusiastically, acknowledging all the support from Mexican fans with a message thanking them for having them this season.
But they didn’t stop there. On Wednesday, Sunderland released a quiz video in which their players Noah Sadiki, Wilson Isidor and Habib Diarra answered quick-fire questions about Mexico, culminating with a spirited: “Let’s go, lads!”
