A Middlesbrough review will determine whether Michael Carrick continues at head coach next season
Former Middlesbrough striker Kris Boyd believes Steve Gibson will give Michael Carrick one more shot next season.
Boro’s head coach has come under fire following a challenging season in which the club finished tenth. It means they lost out on their goal of making the play-offs, as they continue to push for promotion back to the Premier League.
It is widely agreed that Boro’s season was a failure, and as a response, Steve Gibson and other club officials are currently conducting a detailed analysis of the season to identify areas for improvement. The evaluation will also determine whether Carrick remains in charge next season, with the broad consensus now being that he will, provided he accepts the changes that Boro wish to make in the aftermath of their audits.
On such decisions, Boyd said topratedbingosites.co.uk: “I thought when Tommy Conway scored a late penalty kick against Plymouth, they could take it from there, but their performance against Coventry City was poor, and they dropped down the league. It’s a difficult one for Michael Carrick; in the Championship, if you don’t make the playoffs, you’ll be scrutinized.
“Steve Gibson has been very good to his managers, and he has been an excellent chairman who has supported the club. I don’t think he’ll rush to fire Michael Carrick. A discussion will be held to determine whether the club can move further. Michael admits that the second half of the season did not meet his expectations.
“They have not been consistent in the second part of the season. There were moments when you believed they could make the playoffs, but it wasn’t to be, and they fell short. Michael Carrick may even believe that he has taken the club as far as he can, as he has not advanced to the playoffs or achieved promotion. He may also believe that with a few more additions, he will have a chance to take off.”
While Boyd acknowledges that Boro ultimately fell short over the course of a frustrating season, and was particularly disappointed with their efforts at Coventry City on the final day, the former Scotland international highlights the increasingly difficult environment Boro operates in as clubs exit the Premier League with parachute payments. With that in mind, he feels Carrick will get another shot.
He went on to say, “When you look at the teams that have been relegated from the Premier League in recent years, Sheffield United and Leeds have gone straight back up. Burnley has gone down and back up, making it difficult for teams to get into the top two, and third to sixth place goes down to the playoffs, where the pressure builds.
“Middlesbrough will believe they should be challenging, but overall, Michael Carrick has done a decent job and may be looking at the start of the season to get off to a good start, and if that doesn’t happen, they may try to make a change. I don’t think they’ll move Michael on, and I think he deserves another shot.”
