PSV keep the pressure on Ajax with comfortable 1-3 win against FC Twente.
PSV maintained pressure on Ajax by defeating FC Twente 1-3 in the Eredivisie on Thursday. The second-place team is currently six points behind Ajax.
PSV now leads third-place Feyenoord by eight points, but the Rotterdam club faces PEC Zwolle on Friday night. The two highest-placed teams in the Eredivisie will advance to the UEFA Champions League phase and will receive approximately 50 million euros in bonuses and income.
FC Twente lost its fifth league match in a row. They are currently ranked fifth in the league table.
The Eindhoven team was not sharp in the first minute, but they dominated the remainder of the game. After 58 seconds, Twente left winger Naci Ünüvar took the ball from Richard Ledezma and set up Ricky van Wolfswinkel to score.
PSV reacted swiftly to the disappointment. Ivan Persic equalised after 12 minutes thanks to some good play from Guus Til. Ismael Saibari appeared to have put the visitors ahead after this, but the video assistant referee noticed that his effort had not crossed the line by the time Lars Unnerstal saved it.
Twente were fortunate not to concede two goals shortly before halftime. Til first hit the post, and Unnerstal then deflected Mauro Junior’s long-range shot onto the crossbar.
PSV eventually gained the lead in the 53rd minute. Following a great cross from Perisic, Til headed home. Four minutes later, Luuk de Jong made the score 1-3.
Malik Tillman was missing from PSV’s starting lineup. Manager Peter Bosz punished the midfielder for arriving late to the team meeting. The manager also left Ismael Saibari out of the squad for the game against Arsenal last month because the midfielder had been late several times.
Tillman’s first offence earned him permission to travel to Enschede. He was allowed to come on in the 69th minute after Saibari left with what appeared to be a serious injury.
