At St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the opening forty-five minutes of Man City vs. Southampton was

uninspiring.

With several of their competitors playing each other over the weekend, Pep Guardiola’s team entered the match on a

nine-game winning streak and knew that a victory might significantly impact their chances of qualifying for the

Champions League.

When Gary Neville predicted that the two clubs would play a close game, Paul Scholes was taken aback. The Sky

Sports analyst did not appear as foolish after the first half, as there were few opportunities produced and Man City

appeared to lack urgency.

There were therefore very few talking points, but according to BBC commentator Rob Green, Southampton ought to

have been reduced to 10 men because Lesley Ugochukwu ought to have received a second yellow card.

After pulling down Mateo Kovacic with 43 minutes remaining in the game, Ugochukwu received his first yellow card

of the match. A few minutes later, the Southampton star would commit a second bookable offence.

Man City attempted to take a quick free-kick, which is typically a clear yellow card, but the Chelsea loanee stopped

them.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Green said the referee at St Mary’s made a tremendous mistake and that

Ugochukwu should have been given a second yellow card.

“Lesley Ugochukwu ought to leave. The former goalie said, “It is a total cop out [from the referee].” “Come on, what’s

the craic?” Bernardo Silva is arguing with the referee.

It appears that Silva and Kevin De Bruyne discussed the decision with the referee at halftime, and Simon Rusk,

Southampton’s interim manager, made it clear how he felt about the event by dismissing Ugochukwu at halftime.

The decision will not sit well with Man City supporters, who believe that an opponent should have been sent off for

the second consecutive game.

Following a horrible foul on Silva at the Etihad during Man City’s victory over Wolves last week, Jamie Carragher

thought Rayan Ait-Nouri ought to have been sent off.

If City hadn’t gone on to win all three points, it might have been a larger concern, but the officials on the day thought

there wasn’t enough in the challenge to send the Wolves star out.

It would have been much simpler for Man City to defeat Southampton in the second half if Ugochukwu had been

given a second yellow card.
