“I completely understand and appreciate the supporters’ frustrations at this time. As a club, we are working to resolve this matter as soon as possible so that we can begin serious preparations for the future.”
QPR is focussing on retaining centre-back Jimmy Dunne, who is out of contract this summer and has yet to sign a new deal, in addition to the ongoing managerial search. The 27-year-old is negotiating a new contract, but QPR are in a race against time as clubs try to turn the defender’s head.
Sheffield United, led by Chris Wilder, are preparing for another promotion bid after falling short in the play-off final this season. Dunne has been linked with the Blades, and EFL pundit Don Goodman believes it would be a wise move for the Yorkshire club.
“Jimmy Dunne to Sheffield United makes a lot of sense,” Goodman told Football League World. “I believe Chris Wilder would be disappointed that he was unable to bring him to the club in January. There were strong links.
“Despite Queens Park Rangers’ below-average season, Jimmy Dunne continued to impress, scoring numerous goals and having a significant impact on the team. Sheffield United had a fantastic defensive record, but it definitely got worse after Harry Souttar was injured, and I believe that was one of the main reasons Leeds and Burnley were able to pull away. In response to your question, Jimmy Dunne would be good business for Chris Wilder and Sheffield United.
Chris Wilder, Sheffield United’s manager, stated on their website that the play-off loss will take time to recover from. We’ve all been involved in the game for a long time, through the highs and lows, and being labelled as a losing football team hurt me, the players, and, most importantly, the fans.
“The start was what we were looking for; it was a fantastic save (from Kieffer Moore’s header), and we then got our noses in front. The contentious decision will be the one from Harrison’s shot; it was a subjective decision by the referee. But, as their manager stated, why are we using VAR when we haven’t for 46 games, including two in the play-offs? For me, the custodian is not saving it; it has passed him.
“That gave them more energy, it was a lifeline, but we never felt in danger, and I believe the stats back that up; we simply needed to improve when they opened the game up. We were too loose in transition and on turnovers, and if we had been better, we could have scored a second and possibly third goal to seal the game. We conceded two poor goals: the first in a poor situation, and the second with Anel (Ahmedhodžić) off the pitch and the middle of the park wide open. We should have seen those extra minutes and gone into overtime, we should have seen that moment, and it will take a long time to recover from this.
“We were in a controllable position, but our decision-making wasn’t up to par compared to Sunderland’s excellent finishes.” “We could have been in the Premier League if we had been tighter and cleaner, but we let them back in, and they won with a memorable moment.”
