Pundit’s ‘Very Good Timing’ Verdict Sums Up Stoke City’s Revival

Ben Wilmot celebrates as Stoke City move closer to a crucial win at Cardiff.

Stoke City have demonstrated “very, very good timing” in hitting their best form of the season, according to Championship pundit Ali Maxwell.

The Potters have collected 11 points from their last six matches, securing wins over Blackburn, Queens Park Rangers, and Cardiff, while drawing with Preston and Luton. This strong run has created a five-point cushion above the relegation zone with just four games remaining.

Stoke may have been frustrated after only managing a draw against Luton last midweek, especially after conceding a late equaliser, but they followed it up with arguably their most important result of the season — a win in South Wales. Despite the dropped points, their consistent performances over recent weeks have been crucial.

Now, their destiny is in their own hands — while third-bottom Cardiff are feeling the pressure. That “very, very good timing” says it all.

“After Stoke conceded in stoppage time at home to Luton, drawing a game they were leading 1-0, this was a strong response. They’ve now won three of their last six games and picked up 11 points in that stretch. That’s excellent timing from their perspective, giving them a five-point buffer with three teams between them and the drop zone.”

As for Cardiff, Maxwell noted their troubling form in the same period:

“They beat Derby on January 25, but since then it’s been tough. They lost to Portsmouth, drew with Argyle, beat Hull, but then lost to both Luton and Stoke. That’s a real concern.”

Looking ahead, Cardiff travel to Sheffield United on Friday — a fixture many fans might have written off a few weeks ago. However, after seeing two fellow strugglers recently defeat the Blades, there’s renewed hope.

“They’re now winless in four,” Maxwell added. “A 2-1 win over Blackburn at the end of March looked like a turning point, but they’ve since had three draws followed by this damaging defeat to Stoke. That was a game they simply couldn’t afford to lose — especially against a direct rival they could’ve overtaken. Instead, it came down to a missed chance and a bit of misfortune, and they ended up with nothing.”
