QPR extend striker’s contract.
Despite management instability, Queens Park Rangers have extended the tenure of last season’s top scorer Michael Frey. At the end of April, the Hoops placed Spanish head coach Marti Cifuentes on gardening leave, with assistant coaches Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm taking over the team for the Championship season’s last game at home against Sunderland. The off-field uncertainties did not prevent the board from renewing the contract of 30-year-old Swiss forward Frey. While the former Royal Antwerp striker scored only one goal at Loftus Road last season, after arriving during the January transfer window, Frey added 10 goals in all competitions in the most recent campaign.
Rangers completed the season 15th, seven points ahead of the relegation zone. Hoops chief executive Christian Nourry announced the contract extension for a forward who has played top level football in Germany, France, Turkey, Belgium, and his country, saying: “Michi has demonstrated this season that he is more than a handful for Championship defences.” “After eighteen months at QPR, we’ve seen him adapt into London and the league. He is a player with incredible determination and an infectious passion, and we appreciate all of his efforts thus far.”
