QPR have pre-empted revival of high profile interest in star man with new contract move: Opinion.
QPR fans were pleasantly surprised by contract action last week, despite the club’s uncertain position entering the summer.
QPR’s manager Marti Cifuentes is currently on gardening leave, making it unclear who will lead the club during the crucial summer transfer window.
The Rs made a number of new signings last summer, but not all had the desired impact, resulting in a poor start to the season. However, an improvement in results in the middle of the season eventually led the West Londoners away from the relegation battle, and Cifuentes received high praise for it.
Summer interest is not out of question.
Varane, 23, joined QPR in August after establishing himself at Sporting Gijon for two years.
At the time, he was linked with Championship side Norwich City. However, as a powerful, composed, and mobile midfielder, he has previously attracted interest from higher leagues. Last November, Varane revealed that Atletico Madrid expressed interest and held talks.

Last summer, both Atletico and QPR were interested in signing him. The Spanish giants were considering a move in 2023, so it can be viewed as an opportunistic swoop to bring him to West London while his stock was possibly lower.
However, given his progress during his first season in England, summer interest is not out of the question, albeit not from Atletico, but from top-flight clubs abroad. QPR have secured their star player’s future with a new contract, despite other clubs being interested in his success and profile.
QPR maintains a strong negotiating position.
If there are any clubs interested in Varane this summer, the new contract agreement puts the Rs in a strong position to fend off interest. He signed a four-year contract upon arrival, so they were already in a good position, but this new action puts them on even stronger footing.

Who plays at Elland Road?
Varane’s belief in his ability to develop with QPR is validated by his commitment to the club for a longer period of time. No such deal would be signed if he didn’t believe he was in the right place, and tempting him elsewhere will be costly.
It is not impossible for bids to come in and the Hoops to make decisions, but parting ways with Varane would likely require a sizable fee due to his new contract and commitment to the club.
According to reports, Blackburn Rovers, QPR, and Hull City are looking for a striker with ten goals in the Championship.
