In your Tuesday Championship round-up, QPR reject a bid from a La Liga club, while Charlton Athletic hinted at Nathan Jones’ future at The Valley.
QPR have rejected a transfer bid from La Liga side Espanyol for midfielder Jonathan Varane, just weeks after the 23-year-old signed a new long-term contract at Loftus Road.

Last summer, the R’s signed the Frenchman from Sporting Gijon for a reported £875,000. Varane had a slow start to his Championship career, but he improved significantly during the 2024/25 season and finished strong in the centre of the park.

Varane’s efforts were rewarded with a new deal following the close of the season but that has not stopped Espanyol sending an ambitious offer to Loftus Road. West London Sport reports on the bid, which is said to be worth more than £5 million, but they have rejected the fee.

Last season, the midfielder made 39 league appearances for the club and 43 overall. Varane stated upon signing his new contract, “I feel very, very happy.” Signing this new contract feels like a big step forward for me. I’m very proud.

“I really enjoy being here. First and foremost, I’m with my teammates. I believe we have a great group, which has helped me perform well on the pitch on both good and bad days. I love football. It is my passion. When I can play football in a positive environment, such as QPR, I can’t help but smile.”

CEO Christian Nourry stated, “Before I discuss this new contract, I understand the end of the season has not been as smooth as we would have liked with Martí Cifuentes being placed on gardening leave.” I understand that fans may have questions about that decision. When we are in a position to communicate about this, we will do so. Right now, what matters is that we continue to prepare for 2025/26.
