Rangers in pole position to beat rivals to “outstanding” in-demand manager

Rangers are apparently in pole position to employ a “outstanding” manager as their next leader this summer, according to an interesting update on the issue.

The Gers drew 1-1 at home to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon in the final Old Firm derby of the season, as the 2024/25 season approaches nearer its conclusion. Rangers are continuing their search for a permanent new manager, with Barry Ferguson apparently unlikely to be awarded the post beyond his current spell in an interim role, with many names mooted as prospective alternatives to come in this summer.

Marco Rose, who most recently managed RB Leipzig earlier in the season and won two Austrian Bundesliga titles while leading RB Salzburg, has been mentioned in recent weeks.

After leading them to league title glory in 2020–2021, Steven Gerrard has remained a leading candidate to return to Ibrox before the upcoming campaign. The Liverpool icon might perhaps jump at the chance to have a second time as manager, as the Gers attempt to shrink the present gap in quality between themselves and Celtic.

Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider recently claimed that 49ers Enterprises’ “links” with Red Bull make the Rangers the front-runners to appoint Rose as their new manager, even in the face of interest from other teams. According to the source, the appointment is a “real possibility” and places them “above other clubs in the race to secure his services” in the upcoming weeks and months.

There is undoubtedly plenty to like about Rose, in terms of Rangers identifying him as their No.1 option to come in, not least his aforementioned two title wins with Salzburg. The German, who prefers to follow a 4-4-2 style, has excelled at the top level, including leading one of Europe’s largest teams in Dortmund 46 times, and former Germany international Marco Reus has commended him in the past.
