Rangers reach ‘broad agreement’ for new manager hire after 49ers Enterprises jet in

With a significant summer overhaul planned and Champions League qualifying starting in June, 49ers Enterprises are worried that a new manager is needed as soon as possible. Thelwell, 51, has been named the Gers’ new sporting director and will officially take over his position when his contract at Everton expires on June 30.

Since taking over as Rangers’ temporary manager, Barry Ferguson hasn’t performed particularly poorly. But it appears like Thelwell and the 49ers will bring in a new someone from outside the organization to take over full-time.

The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday night (30 April) that while negotiations are still underway over a takeover, a “broad agreement” has been reached by all relevant parties that Thelwell needs to find a new manager swiftly.

Name Job role
Denise DeBartolo York 49ers Co-Chairman
John York 49ers Co-Chairman
Jed York 49ers CEO
Paraag Marathe 49ers Enterprises President
Collin Meador 49ers Enterprises Vice President

Although Thelwell’s contract at Everton doesn’t expire until the end of June, the Mail claims that his duties will end on May 25th, when the Premier League season concludes, meaning that the former Wolves chief will be able to start working on hiring Philippe Clement’s permanent successor as early as that date.

49ers technical director Gretar Steinsson is expected to provide advice on the new full-time manager at Ibrox, with the Icelandic chief reportedly searching Europe for a hire.

Since Clement was fired by Rangers in February, many names have been floated.

Ferguson is a clear contender, given his success in Europe, but the team’s league performance, particularly at Ibrox, has been appalling.

Steven Gerrard’s name has also been brought up frequently; according to recent reports, the Liverpool legend, who left Rangers for Aston Villa in 2021, is the most likely candidate to be hired.

Former RB Leizpig manager Marco Rose is also being brought up as a possible hire.
