Reading FC assistant coach makes West Brom step up

Following Nigel Gibbs’ departure on Monday, Reading’s new owner Rob Couhig confirmed that work is already underway to find a new assistant manager.

The Watford playing legend returned to Berkshire in December to work under Noel Hunt, but now returns to the Championship as Ryan Mason’s assistant manager at West Bromwich Albion, having previously worked together at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 61-year-old was well-liked in Reading, and his latest return marks his third spell there.

Arriving in 2006 to work under Steve Coppell, the former defender served as Brian McDermott’s assistant manager from 2009 to 2013, winning the Championship in 2011/12 while Hunt and fellow coach Mikele Leigertwood were playing.

Joining McDermott at Leeds United, he returned in 2018 under Paul Clement for a less successful spell.

Couhig, who took over less than a month ago, thanked Gibbs for his efforts before departing for the Hawthorns, but confirmed that the search for his replacement is already underway.

“Nigel leaves the club with our best wishes to go and join a club in the league above, and we thank him for helping us achieve a strong placing in last season’s League One campaign,” Couhig told the players.

“Work is now well underway to appoint a successor to Noel’s leadership team, with discussions ongoing with multiple exciting prospects.”

Manager Hunt expressed gratitude to Gibbo for his hard work over the past six months.

“Having an Assistant of his calibre working with me was a huge coup for our club, and his success last season has sparked interest from clubs in higher divisions. I wish him all the best on his next exciting project.”
