Reading FC boss makes Birmingham City comparison in Terriers

The Reading FC manager compares the Terriers to Birmingham City.

In their first home game of the League One season, the Royals take on the Terriers tomorrow in an attempt to recover from their 2-0 loss at Lincoln City last week. Huddersfield, who are seen as one of the favourites for promotion, easily defeated Leyton Orient, the play-off finalists from the previous season, 3-0 on Saturday under new manager Lee Grant. After placing tenth in the third division the previous season, Huddersfield has added players including Joe Low, Sean Roughan, and Alfie May in an attempt to make a comeback to the Championship. Hunt has called them ‘the Birmingham City of this season’ ahead of their trip to Berkshire.

The Blues set a new EFL record with 111 points last season, surpassing Reading’s 106-point haul from 20 years ago. They also broke all transfer records, including spending £15 million on striker Jay Stansfield. Hunt said to the club’s reporters, “It makes me think of Birmingham from last season.” “They have made investments and acquired players who have played in both this league and the one above. Championship defenders like Jack Whatmough, whom I know. With the goals he scores, Alfie May and Marcus Harness are two of their other three or four players.

“They have recruited at a very high level and pose a lot of concerns. Looking back, they defeated a team that made it to the playoffs the previous year with a very strong victory last week. It is our responsibility to counter it and let them know that we too mean business. After winning at the SCL Stadium and drawing 0-0 in Yorkshire last season, the Royals were undefeated against Huddersfield. Todd Trosclair and Rob Couhig, the club’s new owners, will be there as they try to draw a sizable crowd for the inaugural home game.
