Reading FC have ‘a great chance’ next year says Wrexham boss.

Reading will have ‘a tremendous opportunity’ of success in League One next season, according to Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson. The highly decorated manager, affectionately known as ‘Parky’, spent more than a decade in the Royals’ midfield between 1992 and 2003, making over 350 games and won promotion twice.

Parkinson, who was born in Bury, has achieved promotion with Colchester United, Bradford City, and Bolton Wanderers, but he is primarily remembered for managing Wrexham to three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship. This year, the Royals competed with the Red Dragons, beating Wrexham at the SCL Stadium but lost 3-0 in North Wales to finish seventh.

Missing out on the play-offs on the final day, Noel Hunt’s side battled adversity as Dai Yongge continued wreck havoc on the club and top scorer Sam Smith was pinched by Parkinson to join Wrexham in February.
Parkinson told BBC Radio Berkshire that the stability brought about by Rob Couhig’s takeover will allow the club to have ‘a terrific opportunity’ in 2025/26. “Noel performed an incredible job last year to put Reading in contention for the play-offs on the final day. We played them earlier in the season and thought the first 11 looked good, but there wasn’t much behind them. “As the season progressed, the young players grew, and I believe that’s a great foundation to build on for the Academy and those in charge of bringing the players through. “They’ll have a great chance next season with some stability behind the scenes.”
