Reading remain in talks with former Premier League star after Portsmouth spell

Reading are in talks to sign former Premier League star Matt Ritchie, according to reports.

The 35-year-old rose to prominence at Swindon Town before spending nine years in the EFL and Premier League with Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

He helped the Cherries progress from League One to the Premier League, earning Player of the Season twice and being named to three Team of the Year lists, and he also made over 200 appearances for Newcastle United.

Last season, the wide player returned to his boyhood club Portsmouth, where he also played full-back and made 41 appearances.

According to the Portsmouth News, Reading is competing with Championship clubs for his services.

According to the News, The Reading Chronicle knows that former Portsmouth striker Noel Hunt is interested in contributing experience to the club’s youthful squad, and conversations between the parties are underway.

Paddy Lane signed a three-year contract at the SCL Stadium on Thursday, less than a week after leaving Fratton Park.

Ritchie would like assurances about playing time in League One, where he has not appeared since 2012/13.

The transfer window remains open for the remainder of August.
