Real Madrid leap into mix to sign Tottenham’s dream midfield transfer target

To improve a team that was among the poorest in the Premier League the previous season, at least when compared to the other Big Six clubs in England, Tottenham Hotspur has only added one new midfield player. Given that he was one of the Premier League’s top defensive midfielders when at Fulham, loan acquisition Joao Palhinha demonstrated against PSG that he has what it takes to be a valuable addition to Spurs.

However, since he is over 30, Palhinha is not a long-term answer and is likely to return to Bayern Munich after his loan is over rather than being acquired outright. Last summer, Tottenham signed Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, two young midfielders, but they still need another young, emerging anchor who is, unlike Gray, ready to star in the Premier League right here and right now.
