Regis Le Bris’ verdict on Sunderland’s summer transfer window

REGIS Le Bris has praised Sunderland’s ownership and recruitment team for their “really impressive” transfer activity and substantial summer backing.

In order to prepare for their return to the Premier League, Sunderland’s management made 14 summer additions to the team.

This summer, a number of their acquisitions were highly sought after, with players like Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki attracting interest from rival Premier League teams.

And when Sunderland lured the former Arsenal captain to the Stadium of Light, Granit Xhaka was viewed as a huge coup.

Head coach Le Bris, who inked a new deal with Sunderland this summer, says he’s happy with how the summer went and the composition of his team now that the dust has settled on the window.

“I’m really positive, really positive because one of the main challenges when you get promoted like that is to strengthen the squad, and it’s not an easy task because the investment, the way you work together to recruit so many new players, is a massive challenge,” he stated.

“I believe we’re doing great so far.

“Everyone who was involved in that process, including the owner, the sporting direction, and the recruitment structure, is on my mind.

“It is very amazing. Naturally, you have to take on new tasks and put the squad’s quality into practice after that; it’s a process. Right now, I’m content. We’ll see throughout the season after that.

In a brief period of time, the Black Cats have made significant progress.

Despite strengthening his team last summer, Sunderland’s investment was little. Le Bris was hired following a dismal 2023–24 Championship finish of 16th place.

However, the Black Cats have spent more than £150 million this summer in an effort to prepare the Frenchman for the top level.

Le Bris responded, “I don’t know,” when asked if he could have predicted such support when he assumed leadership. It’s an excellent query.

“I want to reiterate that I’m satisfied with the process, the club’s energy, the ambition, and the willingness to take advantage of this opportunity.

“We are aware that it will be difficult for us to develop as a team in this competition. We don’t know what will happen in the future because it’s not linear.

“But right now, at the minute, we can feel that we are well-organised and ambitious.”

As they get ready to play again this weekend at Crystal Palace, Sunderland is doing well on the field, having won two of their first three games and sitting fifth in the standings.
