Report: Sunderland scouts “impressed” as they plot raid on French club for 22-year-old

Sunderland are looking to improve their defensive unit with the signing of Charlie Cresswell from French outfit Toulouse.

The 22-year-old is highly regarded, and Sunderland recently dispatched scouts to watch him play. According to veteran scout Mick Brown, Regis Le Bris is looking to strengthen his defensive unit and has identified the England under-21 international as a target.
“Sunderland have been looking at Charlie Cresswell,” he told Football Insider.

“They had scouts at the Under-21 Euros, and I believe they were impressed with what they saw.

“He only left Leeds last year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him return to the Premier League.

“It will probably be for at least double what he left for, though, because that’s how these things work when you have Premier League clubs battling for a deal.”

Charlie Cresswell could be an asset

Cresswell impressed for England in the under-21 Euros earlier this summer, so it will be intriguing to see whether Sunderland can complete the transfer. They have been promoted to the Premier League and will need to strengthen their roster in the following weeks.

Cresswell would be an excellent long-term addition for them. Meanwhile, the youthful defender will be excited about the possibility to play in the Premier League. It would be a significant step forward for him, and he intends to prove himself at the top level.

Sunderland need quality additions

Sunderland will seek to establish themselves as Premier League regulars. They will not want to return to the Championship next summer. To compete in the Premier League, they must have high-quality players. Improving the defensive unit would be a wise choice.

The former Leeds United defender joined the French club for about £3.8 million in 2024, and Toulouse may try to quadruple their investment. It remains to be seen if the Black Cats are willing to pay for him.

Cresswell had a disagreement with Daniel Farke before leaving Leeds, and he may be driven to show himself in English football.
