Report: Two-time Championship title winner spotted training with Sheffield Wednesday after Norwich City exit

Sheffield Wednesday are now 23rd in the Championship table after losing 3-0 at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Owls’ second loss in two league games, with only arch rivals Sheffield United trailing them in the standings.

Henrik Pedersen believes a dry surface at Hillsborough did not assist his team win the game in South Yorkshire, but their lack of depth proved to be a hindrance once more as the club struggles with financial concerns.

However, a former Norwich City winger who is now training with Sheffield Wednesday may soon provide a solution to some of their wide-open queries.

Onel Hernandez was sighted practicing with Sheffield Wednesday

Onel Hernandez departed Norwich as a free agent in the summer, having made 23 Championship games in his final season.

According to a new story from The Star, the 32-year-old has been training with the Owls over the last week as he considers his options for the 2025/26 season.

Sheffield Wednesday has a three-window transfer embargo, however they can sign free agents and loanees. As a result, a transfer for the winger would be highly welcomed.

However, it is unclear how long he will be at Middlewood Road. Jack Hunt has also spent time with Sheffield Wednesday recently, as the right-back looks to regain fitness after leaving Bristol Rovers.

Onel Hernandez has excelled in the Championship before

Hernandez, 32, is unquestionably nearing the end of his career, but he played a critical role in Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League twice.

In 40 Championship games in 2018/19, the Cuba international scored eight goals and provided ten assists as the Canaries defeated Sheffield United to win the league title.

He, like the rest of his colleagues, struggled in the top division. This struggle continued when he returned to the second division, although he still played 21 games as Norwich won the title again.

He was loaned to Middlesbrough for the next season, then Birmingham City, before returning to Carrow Road in 2022. Sheffield Wednesday will be aiming to add some much-needed expertise to their ranks soon.
