Residents Shocked After ‘Terrifying’ Flat Fire in Chippenham
Residents in Chippenham have described scenes of panic and fear after a devastating flat fire left one man seriously injured and a dog dead. The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Monday morning, tore through a property on Wood Lane, prompting a major emergency response and leaving the local community in shock.
Wiltshire Police and fire crews from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene shortly after 2:30am. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered thick smoke billowing from the first-floor flat, with flames visible from the front-facing windows.
One man in his 40s was rescued from the property by emergency services and was subsequently airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious injuries. His condition remains critical but stable, according to hospital sources. Tragically, a dog also caught in the blaze could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene.
Local residents have spoken of their horror as the events unfolded. “We were woken up by shouting and flashing lights,” said one neighbour. “There was thick smoke and the smell was overwhelming. It was absolutely terrifying.”
Another resident, who asked not to be named, added: “The fire spread so quickly. It’s a miracle more people weren’t hurt. Everyone around here is shaken. We just hope the man pulls through.”
A cordon remains in place around the scene as fire investigators and police work to establish the cause of the blaze. Forensic teams have been seen entering the building, and officers are continuing to take statements from local witnesses.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called to assist Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service at a serious fire at a flat on Wood Lane, Chippenham. One man was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, and sadly, a dog has died. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, but at this time, there is no indication of suspicious circumstances.”
The incident has prompted a strong community response, with neighbours offering support to those affected and tributes already appearing outside the flat. Several residents have left flowers and messages, expressing sadness over the dog’s death and well-wishes for the injured man’s recovery.
A representative from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service added: “Three fire engines attended the incident, and crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties. The fire was contained to a single flat, and investigations are currently focused on identifying its origin.”
As investigators continue their work, the community of Chippenham is rallying around those impacted. “It’s times like these that really show the strength of the neighbourhood,” said local councillor Emma Hart. “Our thoughts are with the injured man and all those affected by this tragic event.”
Emergency services are urging anyone with information or footage from the area at the time of the incident to come forward to assist the investigation.
