Smallwood will leave the Bantams after three years, according to an announcement made earlier today. The 34-year-old refused to sign new contract terms with the club and has decided to go in search of a better chance.
It’s a setback for a squad that was one of three to gain automatic promotion from League Two in 2024/25, with some hoping that the West Yorkshire outfit can establish themselves in League One the following season.

However, we can provide more information about Smallwood’s future, as the ex-Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, and Rotherham United player is attracting interest from a number of EFL third and fourth-tier clubs.
Richie Smallwood is attracting interest from seven League One and League Two clubs.
Bradford’s promotion celebrations are done, and the focus now shifts to assuring the club’s ability to compete in League One. Smallwood’s presence in the run-in was critical, and they will rebuild without him.
Speaking exclusively to EFL Analysis, our transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealed that several of Bradford’s League One opponents are already interested in the experienced midfielder.

We understand that a number of clubs are interested in signing Bradford City’s captain after he leaves Valley Parade. Smallwood, who was voted the club’s Player of the Year as he helped them win promotion, has failed to reach an agreement on a new contract and is now on the move.
Many clubs are interested in the former Middlesbrough player, including Lincoln City, Mansfield Town, Doncaster Rovers, and AFC Wimbledon, who were just promoted.
It doesn’t end there; MK Dons, Chesterfield, and Fleetwood Town in League Two are all said to be interested in the 34-year-old midfielder.
Smallwood is a seasoned centre midfielder with extensive experience, having previously played in the Championship with Hull and Blackburn Rovers.
He is known for his leadership and has been the heartbeat of Bradford’s midfield, therefore he was swiftly named club captain. His experience makes him an important figure for Bradford, directing the team on and off the pitch.
Richie Smallwood sends message to Bradford City fans

Bradford City is a potential surprise package in our early League One predictions for the 2025/26 season. But Smallwood was a significant presence in the locker room, and he leaves a big hole to fill.
He wrote the letter below to Bradford supporters after achieving his goal with the club in 2022.
Smallwood stated: “Three years ago, I decided to leave the Championship and join Bradford City in League Two. The goal was clear: promotion.
“This one is very meaningful because of the trip we’ve taken and how we made it happen.
“My time with Bradford City is coming to an end. My contract will end soon, and the Club has decided not to grant a renewal.
“I’d like to personally thank the fans for their continuous support of me and my family during my time here.
I wish you nothing but success! “Football is a transient industry, players come and go, but the memories we create can last a lifetime.”
