Richie Smallwood signs for Tranmere Rovers on a one-year contract

TRANMERE Rovers have announced the acquisition of former Bradford City captain Richie Smallwood on a one-year contract.

The midfielder, who is approaching his 500th league appearance, began his career with Championship club Middlesbrough after progressing through their academy.

The 34-year-old Redcar native has been vital in his prior clubs’ promotion successes, having advanced from League One to League Two with Rotherham United, Hull City, and Bradford City.

The Bantams’ former captain, named to the EFL’s League Two Team of the Season and Bradford City’s 2024/25 Player of the Season, joins Andy Crosby as his eighth signing of the summer transfer window, providing vital experience and leadership to the center of midfield. He has played the third-most minutes of any center midfielder in the EFL during the last three seasons.

Smallwood stated after signing his contract, “I’m thrilled to sign for the club.” Once Tranmere expressed an interest, I wanted to move quickly.

“When Andy contacted and showed me his presentation of his vision and goals, I knew this was where I wanted to be. I’m eager to be a part of this team.

“I’ve played at Prenton Park before, and the atmosphere was incredible. I’ve only heard positive things about the fans, so I’m excited to play in front of them and maybe give them something to cheer about.”

Crosby continued, “Richie is an experienced leader who adds real experience and know-how to the group.

“He’s captained clubs and been promoted from League One and League Two, so he knows what it takes to succeed. On the pitch, he provides us with control, composure, and true tactical discipline in midfield.

Off the pitch, he sets the tone; his standards, mindset, and professionalism will have a significant impact on the team. We’re very happy to have him with us.”
