Rob Edwards explains why he’s excited to land Alfie Jones as Middlesbrough’s first summer signing
Middlesbrough head coach Rob Edwards has expressed his delight at the arrival of Alfie Jones, describing the new signing as a player who embodies the qualities Boro are aiming to build their team around.
Jones officially became Middlesbrough’s first signing of the summer on Friday, completing a move from Hull City in a deal that could rise to £3 million, including performance-related add-ons. The 26-year-old centre-back penned a four-year deal at the Riverside Stadium and wasted no time integrating into the squad, making his debut in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Rangers, where he featured in the final 20 minutes.
Speaking after the game, Edwards praised Jones’ leadership, consistency, and defensive intelligence—traits he believes will be vital for the club’s ambitions this season.
“I’m really excited to have Alfie on board,” said the Boro boss. “He’s someone we’ve watched closely, and the more we learned about him on and off the pitch, the more it became clear that he’s a great fit for what we’re trying to do here.”
Edwards highlighted Jones’ versatility as another major plus. While he’s most known for playing at centre-half, the former Southampton academy graduate is also comfortable in a holding midfield role—giving the Boro boss more tactical flexibility.
“Alfie brings real versatility. He’s strong in the air, reads the game really well, and communicates constantly with those around him,” Edwards added. “That kind of composure and experience is massive—especially when you’re building from the back.”
Jones was a mainstay in Hull City’s defence last season, making 45 appearances in all competitions and helping the Tigers to a top-half finish in the Championship. His consistent performances earned admiration across the division, and Middlesbrough moved decisively to beat off competition from rival clubs.
“We’re getting someone with proven Championship pedigree,” said Edwards. “He’s been through tough spells, handled pressure, and always stood up to be counted. That tells you about his character.”
The move marks another important step in Middlesbrough’s summer rebuild, with Edwards keen to strengthen a backline that saw several changes last term. Jones is expected to be a key figure not just for his defensive work, but also as a leader in the dressing room—especially with the departure of senior figures in recent windows.
“He’s a natural leader,” Edwards continued. “He may be new to the group, but he’s already had a voice in training. That tells you how comfortable and confident he is. We want that kind of personality in our squad.”
The club’s recruitment team, led by head of football Kieran Scott, have been working closely with Edwards to secure targets early in the window, and landing Jones signals intent as Boro aim to challenge for promotion in the upcoming Championship season.
As for Jones himself, the defender said he was “buzzing” to join a club of Middlesbrough’s stature and is eager to make his mark on Teesside.
With more signings expected in the coming weeks, Jones’s early arrival gives him a chance to bed in before the season opener—and Edwards is confident the best is yet to come.
“He’s at a great age and still improving. We’re excited to see him grow here and be a big part of our journey.”
