Middlesbrough’s Championship promotion bid will be far stronger if they keep big names on Teesside
Rob Edwards is speaking plainly when he says that if the club’s great players go this summer, they must be replaced by players who can strengthen the team even more.
Nobody will quarrel with this assertion. However, the transfer market can be quite dangerous. Middlesbrough must be absolutely certain that they are signing the correct replacements. Simply looking back to January demonstrates how tough it is to get things right while trying to bolster the team.
Boro signed a half-dozen players who either couldn’t adjust quickly enough or weren’t good enough. This ultimately resulted in the firing of previous head coach Michael Carrick. The club improved last summer with the arrivals of Tommy Conway, Ben Doak, George Edmundson, and Neto Borges, but the latter took half a season to settle in.
Furthermore, the injuries to Doak and Edmundson exacerbated Carrick’s problems. Boro making every effort to keep Hayden Hackney, Rav den den Berg, and Finn Azaz is the ideal scenario in my opinion.
However, if those three were still in place, Edwards would be in a much better position to mount a serious fight for a top-six spot since he could build his new-look team around them. Keeping your best players is easier than replacing them like for like.
Regardless, Edwards will undoubtedly have a good impact on the squad, and everyone, including any newcomers, will be pumped and ready to go in August.
However, it is a long season. Much hinges on Boro learning from their mistakes in January and not repeating them in the transfer market. It’s much more difficult because Boro aren’t huge money players, even in the Championship. But they need to get it right.
