Rob Edwards has been announced as the Boro manager, and the full details of the new coaching setup have been released.
Rob Edwards has been confirmed by MIDDLESBROUGH as their new head coach.
Edwards takes over for Michael Carrick, who was fired after nearly three years in charge following the team’s elimination from the Championship play-offs the previous season.
Before the new season begins, a new coaching staff joins the former Luton Town and Watford manager, who has agreed to a three-year contract at the Riverside.
Harry Watling, a highly regarded coach with first-team coaching experience at Chelsea, West Ham, and Rangers, will join Adi Viveash, who has been Coventry City’s assistant manager for seven years and has coached in Chelsea’s academy for nine years.
With Boro’s players scheduled to report for preseason training at the beginning of next month, Edwards has already started work at Rockliffe Park.
“Being granted the chance to serve as head coach of this outstanding football team is truly an honor,” Edwards remarked. The significance of this, its magnitude, and its impact on individuals are things that I am aware of. The fan base is incredible.
“I became excited as soon as I realized that this was the correct thing for me. We have a great chance here, so if I was going to return, I wanted to do so at a location where we had a chance.

“We have an outstanding owner who has a history of providing his coaches with the time, encouragement, and resources they need to strive to succeed. I am eager to begin right now.
Edwards, who was born in Telford, had a great playing career, making 235 professional appearances, over half of which were for Wolves.
Before departing to work at the FA’s junior setup, where he served as head coach of the England Under-16s, he started his coaching career in Wolves’ academy.
His first senior position was as head coach of Forest Green, when he was named League Two Manager of the Season and the team won promotion to League One for the first time in its history during his first season in command.
His accomplishments led to a transfer to Watford, where he succeeded Roy Hodgson. However, he was fired after overseeing just ten league games, even though his team was in tenth place.
After his first season at Kenilworth Road ended with the Hatters’ unexpected promotion to the Premier League after defeating Coventry City in the play-off final, he returned to management at Luton Town in November 2022.
Despite having the lowest budget in the Premier League, Edwards’ Luton team did a respectable job of surviving and ended up in 18th place.
However, their return to the Championship proved difficult, and in January, Edwards left by mutual agreement with his team in 20th place. On the last day of the season, Luton would ultimately be demoted.
“I’ve known Rob for a while, and I’ve kept a close eye on his growth as a coach,” said Kieran Scott, head of football at Boro. “Winning promotion to the Premier League with Luton Town was an incredible accomplishment, and he made history at Forest Green Rovers.”
“Rob stood out from the dynamic pool of applicants for this position, and we were really delighted after meeting him and hearing him discuss his goals for the team. Rob’s agreement to join us excites us, and we look forward to what lies ahead.
