Rotherham United struck gold with Huddersfield Town transfer coup – Cardiff City & Neil Warnock ensured sweet profit
Three points above the bottom three, Rotherham was in a relegation battle halfway through the 2014–15
Championship season.
With just 21 goals in their first 25 games—the second-lowest total in the division—the Millers were in dire need of a
frontline boost before the second half of the season started.
A loan arrangement was initially arranged to send Danny Ward from West to South Yorkshire to join Steve Evans’
club because he had only started two league games for the Terriers in 2014–15 and had scored ten goals and supplied
six assists for Huddersfield Town the season before.
Two days later, that agreement was made permanent for an undisclosed sum that was reportedly only £375,000.

Ward only played for a few seasons at the AESSEAL New York Stadium before joining Neil Warnock’s promotion-
threatened Cardiff City, where he eventually made a respectable profit for the Bradford-born forward.
Danny Ward’s time at Rotherham United was a big success despite not being prolific

who had more than 20 goal-scoring seasons in a row.
Rather, he was always able to do a little bit of everything, and the AESSEAL New York Stadium demonstrated that.
In his first half-season at Rotherham, he would make ten Championship appearances, scoring three goals and
providing two assists as the Millers showed progress in front of goal in the second half of the 2014–15 season,
finishing with 25 goals in their final 21 league games.
Ward only managed four goals in his first full season with the team, but his nine assists more than made up for it.
After spending most of the season in the bottom three, Rotherham went on an 11-game undefeated streak from
February to April to survive, and he was a key part of the team’s incredible comeback under Championship specialist
Neil Warnock.
The following season was a memorable one for the Millers, as they only managed five victories and finished at the
bottom of the standings, 29 points outside of safety.
With 11 of Rotherham’s 40 league goals that season, Ward had his best scoring season and demonstrated to the rest
of the division that he was definitely Championship quality.
In the summer of 2017, veteran manager Neil Warnock pushed to sign the then-26-year-old for Cardiff City after
realising that.
Rotherham United earned a good profit for Danny Ward
Few people anticipated that, as a League One team, Rotherham would get as good a deal from Cardiff to get the
striker to Wales, but the Bluebirds spent £1.6 million plus add-ons to remove him from the AESSEAL New York
Stadium.
Despite having to watch much of Cardiff’s first season from the sidelines owing to a season-ending injury sustained
in December, Ward contributed to the team’s promotion to the Premier League, therefore at the time, the money was
worth it.
Before demonstrating his value again in a few Championship play-off teams in Southeast Wales and back at
Huddersfield, the striker played in the Premier League for Cardiff. He shown how important he was to a team as a
striker, although only averaging a goal every three or four games.
With a small cost, Rotherham was able to take advantage of the fact that those strikers are sometimes overlooked.
Fortunately, Danny Ward’s valuation was satisfied, and the team will be pleased that they were able to turn a solid
profit on the crucial forward.
