Russell Martin Is Shopping At St Mary’s Bid Made For Southam
The Scottish powerhouses have already placed a bid for one player, while incoming Rangers manager and former
Saints manager Russell Martin is reportedly returning to St Mary’s with his credit card.
Rangers have reportedly made a serious offer to Southampton for Sam Edozie, according to Ibrox News.
They claim that Russell Martin is now prepared to solidify the Gers’ long-standing interest in the player, and they
have extended an offer to the Saints.
The article also claims that Rangers will face competition from several other clubs for Edozie’s signature.
However it seems strange that Martin should be keen to sign Edozie, in 2023/24 as he took Southampton to
promotion from the Championship, in 46 League games he started Edozie in just 16 of those, he made another 16
appearances as a sub and had another 12 games where he sat on the bench but didn’t get on the pitch.
He scarcely appeared in the previous 13 games, missed the first leg against West Brom, made a brief substitute
cameo at home, then oddly played 48 minutes at Wembley following one start against Stoke.
There was little indication that Russell Martin thought highly of Edozie as a player, and this was further shown when
he sent the winger to Anderlecht following two substitute appearances in the first three Premier League games.
He obviously didn’t think the player would fit into his 100% possession football style, so why is he so eager to sign
him?
Edozie joined Saints in the summer of 2022 for about £8 million, and as he still has two years left on his deal,
Southampton is not in a rush to sell.
In my opinion, Saints would be better off holding onto him. During our promotion season, Edozie scored six goals
and provided three assists, which was a respectable return for the amount of time he played. This was in contrast to
Ryan Fraser, with whom he was directly competing for a left flank spot.
This might be the case for the upcoming season, and the Saints might prefer to pay Edozie now and rely on Ryan
Frazer, who has experience, or perhaps recruit a new player.
However, considering Russell Martin’s prior reluctance to play Edozie, the assertion that the Rangers are interested
in him still seems odd.
